I think all of us are more than ready for this winter to end and welcome the coming of spring. This long and tough winter has had a damaging effect on retail sales during the first quarter. Snow and cold temperatures have forced many retailers to close and prevented customers from venturing out to shop. This loss of sales and revenue can not be made up.  Fifty eight percent of retailers reported sales down in January while only 37% showed an increase. Most of this can be attributed to weather.  Even with that said, the National Retail Foundation is still projecting a 4.1% increase in retail sales for 2014. I have mentioned in past newsletters this year, the markets we have attended have been encouraging, traffic is up and the buyers are making purchases.
We just returned from the Housewares Show in Chicago. We spoke with several licensees and all we pleased with the show. Retail consolidation has created less traffic, but the retail doors are still there. The attitude appeared to be positive and deals were being made. We were at the show through Tuesday afternoon and there was still traffic in the booths. The housewares industry has weathered the recent retail slump better than most other sectors and it is obvious it will remain strong.
We had a new licensee, Northern International, launch a collection of Rockwell inspired flameless candles. We were very happy with the execution and they were pleased with the response and interest in the assortment. They plan to increase the offering and expand into non-Rockwell illustrations from our archive. This is a growing category and we are excited and happy to have Northern as a partner.

Travelers Club who is a existing licensee also introduced three new sku’s featuring our images on hard sided luggage.   The execution and quality are excellent and they have already had interest from major retailers. They will be adding additional images to the collection focusing on the 20”expandable rolling carry-on.  Think of us when you spot these bags rolling through your airports!

Our next show will be The Licensing Show in June. We have finalized our booth plans and show catalogs. It will be here before you know it! We will NOT be participating in the Surtex show this year, so we  will be in touch soon to schedule appointments for Las Vegas.
Please let us know how we can help you grow your business. We would be happy to suggest art or help with design. As I have said in the past, we love to be challenged.
